Landbeach Public Art project – the final phase

Email Print PDF
From Landbeach Parish Council

You have probably noticed the appearance of a sculpture in front of the Village Hall. Have you looked around the back of it? You might be surprised if you do! Hint: newt!

Read on to find out what it is and why it is there – and where you come into it.

Where are we now?

Our artist has now delivered and installed 3 art works for the village:

  1. The “Landbeach Village Hall” Sign

  2. The bunds and seating on the rec side of the Village Hall.

  3. And now ... the Anvil/Newt display piece – ready for printed copy to be added

What’s this all about?

The Landbeach Public Art Project has been a long haul – so long, in fact, that you’ve probably forgotten all about it! So here is the background.

Way back in November 2011, an open village meeting was held, at which attendees voted to appoint the artist Peter Osborne to provide the village with some art work. The motivation and funding for this came from Developer money linked to the Walnut Close development.

A Public Art support group was set up. This was originally chaired by parishioner Peter White, with guidance from South Cambs officers, Amy and Andy. The hope then was to have the art works ready before the Jubilee celebrations in 2012. Little did we know that, for various reasons, in particular the artist’s health troubles, the works would only just be near completion at the end of 2014.

What is still to be done?

The finishing touch will be a printed map/information panel on the front of the display area (the sail) above the anvil. This will be printed, laminated, cut to shape (possibly oval as the display surface is not square) and applied by a local sign company.

The current plan is to include:

  • a map of the parish, showing the neighbouring parishes

  • then perhaps a ‘pop-out’ showing the historic heart of the village

  • finally we could have links to individual historic or noteworthy features, maybe pen and ink (or rollerball) drawings or photos done by parishioners

But if you have any other ideas then we would love to hear them.

Would you like to be involved?

We would love to hear from anyone who would enjoy contributing to the design and content of the printed panel.

If you might be interested, please contact Melanie Hale (melsarhal@gmail.com, 441522), Ray Gambell (860757), Barbara Le Gallez (860283) or any Parish Councillor. Thank you!
